EQ-STR-004: Types of analysis for earthquake resistant design

Earthquake resistant design is becoming increasingly complex as we are gradually aligning to the global design practices. It is required to perform different types of analysis for seismic design such as response spectrum analysis, p-delta analysis, nonlinear static analysis (pushover analysis), nonlinear dynamic analysis, etc. It is imperative to understand the overall methodology, limitations as well as software applications for each type of analysis. Because, if type of analysis considered is not appropriate or if the software application is not right then the intended purpose of earthquake resistant design wonโ€™t be achieved.  Following types of analysis which will be considered in the course: Response spectrum analysis P-Delta analysis Nonlinear static analysis (pushover analysis) Linear time history analysis Nonlinear time history analysis In the course, we will start with fundamentals of structural dynamics wherein we will understand single degree of freedom, mode shapes, natural frequency, time period, acceleration, damping, resonance, etc. along with study models in ETABS. Thereafter, we will consider detailed discussion on each type of analysis wherein we will discuss software application along with the fundamentals. We will experiment different types of analysis on study models of single storey as well as for G+30 building. Results obtained from different types of analysis for the similar buildings will be compared. The participants will be encouraged to apply the same concepts whether on study models or on real projects and share their findings or queries during the course. The entire course is designed as a process of learning together. The entire course will be extremely useful for preparation of in-house check-list, working procedure, Doโ€™s and Donโ€™ts, etc. for different types of analysis for buildings.

STEEL-STR-001: Decode IS 800:2007 along with software (4th batch)

For design of steel structures, IS 800:2007 was published before ~14 years but still there are many practical difficulties related to implementation of the IS code. It is not a conventional revision of the code as there is complete change in design philosophy from working stress design method to limit state design method. There are practical difficulties since commentary on the code along with practical examples are not available. Also, there are certain gaps between the latest IS code and the current popular software. It is heard from few engineers that the tonnage we get from the design using IS 800:2007 is higher than the earlier code. Also, there is no confidence in the group of engineers while designing the structure using limit state design method. Hence, they are cross checking results with the working stress method since the software is having both the options. These kinds of scenarios have prompted us to launch a unique course: STEEL-STR-001 ( Decode IS 800:2007 along with the software).  The course will cover discussion on important clauses of the code as well as application of same in the software, STAAD Pro, RAM connections & ETABS. The course will cover the important areas such as possibilities of cost optimisation, second order elastic analysis, plastic analysis, elastic buckling load factor, moment amplification factors, effective length calculations, different limit states, block shear, lateral torsional buckling, connection design, earthquake resistant design, etc.

STEEL-STR-006: Design of connections for steel structures

Design of connections for steel structures is one of the grey area in the industry. The practice varies from consultant to consultant to a great extent and there are number of ambiguities in the connection design. In India, IS 800:2007 was published before ~15 years and section 10 is included for the connection design. The important areas for the connection design are mentioned briefly in the section 10. However, in absence of the detailed practical handbook, there are number of doubts/ambiguities related to the connection design as per the Indian Standard. Also, there is a possibility of missing out on the important limit states while performing the connection design. The online course STEEL-STR-006 is launched with an aim of increasing the confidence level of engineers related to the connection design and to enable them for developing their own means for the connection design. The area of connection design is comprehensively covered in EUROCODE 3. Hence, in the course, we will initiate the discussions related to fundamentals & concepts for the connection design based on EUROCODE-3. Thereafter, we will discuss in detail, the connection design as per AISC 360-22. Seismic design requirements for connection design will be discussed as per AISC 358-16. Finally, we will take up the connection design as per IS 800:2007.  We will discuss design of different types of bolted connections, welded connections, connections for tubular sections, etc. The important limit states for connection design will be covered such as flange bending, block shear, bearing failure, shear failure, web yielding, web crippling, web panel zone shear, web compression buckling, requirements for seismic design, etc. along with the diagrams and worked out examples. For more details related to content of the course, please refer schedule towards end of the document.
